SA vs IND: KL Rahul joins Virat Kohli, Sourav Ganguly in elusive list –KL Rahul, Team India’s stand-in captain, put another feather to his already historic hat with his 13th Test half-century against South Africa. As regular skipper Virat Kohli was sidelined with an upper back spasm, the 29-year-old Rahul continued his outstanding form by hitting a tenacious half-century from 133 deliveries before succumbing to a short delivery from Marco Jansen.

Although the Indian batting meltdown, which saw Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane out in quick succession, Rahul held his ground in the second session, pushing the total above 100. He added 42 with Hanuma Vihari and another 25 with Pant before miscuing a hook shot and throwing it to Kagiso Rabada in the fine leg region.

Rahul joined anΒ  elite list of Indian captains who have scored 50 or more runs in their first Test captaincy. Vijay Hazare leads the panel, having scored an unbeaten 164 in 1951. Sunil Gavaskar (116 runs) and Virat Kohli (115 runs) are second and third, respectively.

Sourav Ganguly (84 runs), Chandu Borde (69), Hemu Adhikari (63) and Nari Contractor (62) are also a part of the list that also houses Rahul after his 50 off 133 deliveries.

Rahul also have become the 5th Indian captain to get a 50-plus score while beginning the innings. Sunil Gavaskar leads the list, having crossed the mark on 25 occasions. Contractor (4 times), Rahul Dravid (2 times) and Virender Sehwag (2) also are part of the elusive club.

Initially in the day, Rahul and Mayank Agarwal provided India a solid start, while Kagiso Rabada and Duanne Olivier Bowled from opposite ends. Jansen had Agarwal caught behind by wicket-keeper Kyle Verreynne as the pair was on their way to establishing another spectacular stand in South Africa.
