NZ vs SA 1st Test: 13 wickets fall on Day 1; Proteas bundled out for 95 as hosts take lead

NZ vs SA 1st Test: Matt Henry’s seven-wicket haul was backed up by a gritty batting display from Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls as New Zealand dominated South Africa on Day 1 of the ongoing first Test at the Hagley Oval on Thursday.

New Zealand’s total at stumps was 116/3, with a 21-run lead. At the crease, Henry Nicholls (37*) and Neil Wagner (2*) remain unbeaten. After bowling South Africa out for 95, Tom Latham and Will Young put on an 18-run stand for the first wicket, but Marco Jansen broke it in the 12th over when he bowled Young (8). Duanne Olivier bowled Latham (15) soon after, reducing New Zealand to 36/2.

The duo of Henry Nicholls and Devon Conway then got together at the crease and put up a 75-run partnership. On the cusp of stumps, Olivier bowled Conway (36), breaking the stand. And then, Nicholls and Wagner ensured that New Zealand did not lose any wickets on Day 1 before the end of play.

Earlier in the match, South Africa was bowled out for 95 runs in 50 overs after being sent to bat on Day 1. Matt Henry returned with figures of 7-23, destroying the Proteas batting order.

Only four South Africa batters managed to get into double figures — Zubayr Hamza (25), Kyle Verreynne (18), Aiden Markram (15), and Sarel Erwee (10). Tim Southee, Kyle Jamieson, and Neil Wagner also returned with one wicket each.

Brief Scores:

South Africa 95 all out (Zubayr Hamza 25, Kyle Verreynne 18; Matt Henry 7-23);

New Zealand 116/3 ( Henry Nicholls 37*, Devon Conway 36; Duanne Olivier 2-).
