IPL 2022: David Warner opens up on undignified SRH exit – Warner captained SRH for the first six games of the previous IPL season before being dismissed of from his captaincy after the team only won one game.

Before his connection with the franchise soured, he played for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Warner, 35, was fired as captain midway through last year’s IPL season after leading the Hyderabad-based team to its first title win in 2016. Warner was also demoted from the team’s starting lineup, adding to the turbulence in the franchise.

Winning the T20 World Cup would have given Warner some relief, but he was “hurt” after his dismissal. The southpaw was dissatisfied with the way he was dismissed by the team.

“What message does it convey to the youngsters in the team if you drop a captain and then don’t pick him in the team after what he’s done?” What does that communicate to the rest of the group? “What hurts me the most is that the other guys are now thinking, ‘Oh, this could happen to me,'” Warner said on talk show Backstage with Boria.

“At the end of the day, no matter what happens, take it on the chin.” If you want to have those discussions, go ahead and do so. It’s not difficult. Don’t be afraid of them. I’m not going to eat you. I’m going to sit here and take it for what it is because you’re not going to pick me for the team,” he added.

Warner also emphasised the importance of “icon players,” who aid in the development of a team’s brand. He also discussed the impact of his abrupt departure on SunRisers Hyderabad fans. In IPL 2021, the franchise had a dismal season, failing to make the playoffs with only three victories in 14 games.

“It was the agony I knew would be felt by the fans. They are the foundation of a franchise. They help you develop your brand. Icon players are found on the world’s best teams. I’ve been there for quite some time. Kane Williamson and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have both been there for a long period. You create a brand and then move forward with it.”

Warner captained SRH for the first six games of the season before being relieved of his captaincy after only one win. Kane Williamson took over as captain of the side, and the star opener was left out of the Playing XI for the side’s sixth game of the competition.

“It pains me because I am passionate about where I play, and they truly felt it.” Because I understand how important fans are, I will engage with them in any manner I can. Those youngsters in the playground who want to be Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson, Steve Smith, you name it, they want to be us. We need to make contact with them. It upsets them when they witness anything like that” he added.
