IPL 2022: Ashish Nehra to become head coach of Ahmedabad IPL team, Gary Kirsten to be mentor – Veteran India fast bowler Ashish Nehra will be the head coach of the Ahmedabad IPL franchise during the 2022 Indian Premier League season, while England opener Vikram Solanki is in line to become ‘Director of Cricket.’

Nehra formerly worked as a coach with Royal Challengers Bangalore, where Kirsten played for a few seasons.

Former India coach Gary Kirsten will serve as the team’s ‘Mentor,’ with the franchise hoping to receive its formal ‘Letter of Intent’ (LOI) later this month.

‘From what I’ve heard, they’ve hired Ashish as their head coach and someone in general charge of the franchise.’ Solanki will be the ‘Director of Cricket,’ also serving as batting coach, and Kirsten will serve as a mentor,” a senior IPL source told PTI on condition of anonymity.

“The Ahmedabad franchise cannot formally declare it because it is a BCCI diktat, and they can only make a formal announcement after they receive the LOI.” The head honchos of the Ahmedabad franchise have already interviewed and short-listed the trio for the season,” according to the source.

Nehra formerly worked as a coach with Royal Challengers Bangalore, where Kirsten played for a few seasons.

They’ve had a long and good working relationship since Nehra was a player and Kirsten was his national coach.

Nehra gets along well with Solanki, who has previously worked as an IPL coach.

The team will appoint a few assistant coaches after it receives the go-ahead from BCCI.

Nehra had already been aside for coaching for two seasons because he had decided that he would only accept such an assignment if he possessed the profile of a head coach capable of making a difference in terms of squad composition and strategy.

He had many offers from various IPL franchises, but it is believed that the veteran left-arm pacer is more interested in taking on the job of constructing a strong squad from the ground up.
