AUS vs SL 1st T20I: Josh Hazlewood’s spell help hosts to register victory in rain-curtailed match

AUS vs SL 1st T20I: Australia defeated Sri Lanka by 20 runs via the DLS method in the first T20I of the five-match series here at Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday, with Josh Hazlewood’s heroic spell.

Australia reached 149/9, but their target was lowered to 143, which they had to chase down in 19 overs. To give their side a 20-run victory, Hazlewood took four wickets and Adam Zampa took three. With Sri Lanka chasing 150 runs, they were dealt an early blow when opener Danushka Gunathilaka was bowled by Josh Hazlewood for just one run, leaving the score at 3/1. Pat Cummins then ordered Avishka Fernando back to the dugout after he joined starter Pathum Nissanka for a short time.

Later in the innings, Charith Asalanka and Nissanka tried to anchor the innings and keep the Lankans’ scoreboard moving. Their happiness was short-lived, however, as Zampa scalped two wickets in a row, dismissing both hitters with the team’s score at 64/4 in the 11th over.

After being dismissed for just 13 runs, Wanindu Hasaranga became the third hitter to fall victim to Zampa’s spell. The play was subsequently halted due to rain, and the goal was reduced to 143 to be pursued in 19 overs.

When Australia returned from the break, Hazlewood got three wickets and sent Dasun Shanaka, Chamika Karunaratne, and Dushmantha Chameera back to the dugout, restricting the visitors to 122/8 and winning by 20 runs.
